Received the Dr. Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, in 1962, and the Libera Docenza in electronic computers from the Italian university system in 1968. He is currently a Professor of Informatics at the University of Pisa.

After an industrial experience with Olivetti, he taught and conducted research in various fields of C.S. at the Politecnico di Milano, M.I.T. (Project MAC), the University of Southern California, and New York University , before returning permanently to Italy . where he became a professor at the University of Pisa , serving as department chairman for six years, and as coordinator of the Ph.D. program in Informatics for other six years.

He spent several sabbatical periods as a visiting professor at U.C.L.A., the University of Illinois , the National University of Singapore, Carleton University in Canada , the B.U.A.P. in Puebla , Mexico , and the U.N.S.A.A.C in Cusco , Perù, where he was nominated a Profesor Honorario. He has been a visiting scientist at T.J. Watson Research Center of IBM, USA , and a distinguished foreign scholar at the NTT LSI Laboratories in Morinosato , Japan . He has also been a distinguished scientist in the city of Ottawa , Canada , where he was invited by the municipality to carry on cooperative research with the local universities.  He has given a very large number of invited lectures and conferences in many countries.

He has pursued intense activities with UNESCO, for the dissemination of informatics at university level in developing countries. For a long time his major scientific interest has been in computing systems, particularly in parallel and distributed processing. It is now in algorithm and data structures, with attention to Web problems. He is author of more than one hundred and fifty papers published in international research journals and conference proceedings, of four major university text books in theoretical computer science, and of two books on scientific culture at large. He received several scientific and academic prizes, and is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.

Además, ha sido Profesor Visitante de la University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, U.S.A., de la University of Wisconsin Madison, U.S.A., y de la Università degli Studi di Pisa, Italia.

Actualmente: Como coordinador para Latinoamérica del Proyecto UNESCO "Education in Basic Sciences for Informatics", en Octubre de 2007 fue Coordinador de la IV Internacional School on Network Security Impact on Quality Software Engineering ( www.insovina.cl ). Como Profesor Adjunto Asociado del Programa de Postgrado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, creó y continúa a cargo de una Fábrica de Software ( www.fabricadesoftware.cl ) en su décimo año académico. Durante 2007 ha sido Profesor Guía de una decena de alumnos en proceso de titulación en Informática.

• Posición Académica Actual: Desde 1996 es Profesor Adjunto Asociado del Programa de Postgrado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Colabora como Profesor desde 2002 en Ingeniería de DuocUC, sede Viña del Mar.
• Distinciones: Ha sido distinguido, entre otras, por las siguientes instituciones: Colegio San Pedro Nolasco, Escuela Naval de Chile, Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, IBM, LASPAU-The Latin American Scholarship Program of American Universities-, MIT, UNESCO, PNUD, CISM, Fundación Andes.

Colaboró en la formación de CLEI (Centro Latinoamericano de Estudios en Informática) y la actual Conferencia latinoamericana en Informática, durante el Cuarto Panel'75 de Discusión sobre Tópicos de Computación, del cual fue Coordinador General.

Worked on improving support for Web and Enterprise technologies (code hints, code completion, hyperlinking, etc.) in the NetBeans IDE. (versions 5.5, 6.0, 6.1). Currently developing PHP Editing support from scratch, it will be a part of NetBeans 6.5.
